Notifications tell you about changes that affect you, even when Blades is closed. You switch them on for each device separately, so your phone and your laptop can differ. Nothing is sent until you turn them on.
Notifications show full detail, including session titles, times, other people’s names, outing plans and a preview of feedback written to you. Your device may show this on a locked screen. Switch off the kinds you do not want, or restrict previews in your device settings.

Turn them on for this device

  1. Open Settings, then Notifications. On a phone, open the Settings tab and choose Notifications.
  2. Read the line under This device.
  3. Select Enable notifications.
  4. When your browser asks for permission, choose Allow. Blades asks only after you select the button, never when a page loads.
When it works, the line reads Notifications are on for this device, and a checkbox appears for each kind. Repeat these steps on every device you want to notify.

iPhone and iPad

Notifications work on iOS and iPadOS 16.4 or later, and only from the Home Screen app. Safari tabs cannot receive them.
  1. In Safari, open Blades and select Share, then Add to Home Screen.
  2. Open Blades Rowing from the new Home Screen icon.
  3. Follow the steps above inside that app.
On iOS, notifications show no action buttons. Tapping the notification itself opens Blades.

Choose what you receive

On the Notifications screen, tick or untick each kind. The choice applies to this device only and saves as you tick. You are never notified about a change you made yourself. One edit that changes several things sends one notification that lists them all.

What happens when you tap a notification

Tapping opens Blades and takes you to the right place for your role and your current club. If you are signed out, you sign in first and then land there. If the notification is from a club other than the one you are viewing, Blades switches to that club for you. If you have left that club, you see a short notice and go to your usual start page instead. On Android and desktop, some notifications have a button such as View session or Open feedback. It opens the same place as tapping the notification and never changes anything for you. Your app icon may show a badge with the number of notifications still waiting. It clears as you open them.

Turn them off

Open Settings, then Notifications, and select Disable notifications under This device. Blades deletes this device’s subscription straight away. Other devices are unaffected. To stop one kind, untick it instead.

If notifications are not working

Email [email protected] if it still fails. See the privacy policy for what Blades stores about your device.
