# Turn on notifications

> Get a message on your phone or computer when a session, crew, feedback or booking changes, and choose which kinds you receive.

Notifications tell you about changes that affect you, even when Blades is closed. You switch them on for each device separately, so your phone and your laptop can differ. Nothing is sent until you turn them on.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Notifications show full detail, including session titles, times, other people's names, outing plans and a preview of feedback written to you. Your device may show this on a locked screen. Switch off the kinds you do not want, or restrict previews in your device settings.

## Turn them on for this device

1. Open **Settings**, then **Notifications**. On a phone, open the **Settings** tab and choose **Notifications**.
2. Read the line under **This device**.
3. Select **Enable notifications**.
4. When your browser asks for permission, choose **Allow**. Blades asks only after you select the button, never when a page loads.

When it works, the line reads **Notifications are on for this device**, and a checkbox appears for each kind. Repeat these steps on every device you want to notify.

### iPhone and iPad

Notifications work on iOS and iPadOS 16.4 or later, and only from the Home Screen app. Safari tabs cannot receive them.

1. In Safari, open Blades and select **Share**, then **Add to Home Screen**.
2. Open Blades Rowing from the new Home Screen icon.
3. Follow the steps above inside that app.

On iOS, notifications show no action buttons. Tapping the notification itself opens Blades.

## Choose what you receive

On the **Notifications** screen, tick or untick each kind. The choice applies to this device only and saves as you tick.

| Kind | You are told when |
| - | - |
| Sessions | You are added to or removed from a session, a session you are in is rescheduled, changes its location, outing plan, or is cancelled or deleted, or your seat, boat or role changes. |
| Training | A coach prescribes, changes or cancels own-time training for you. |
| Crews | You are added to a crew. |
| Feedback | Someone sends you personal feedback, or writes a note to a session you were assigned to. |
| Equipment | Someone else moves or removes your equipment booking. |

You are never notified about a change you made yourself. One edit that changes several things sends one notification that lists them all.

## What happens when you tap a notification

Tapping opens Blades and takes you to the right place for your role and your current club. If you are signed out, you sign in first and then land there. If the notification is from a club other than the one you are viewing, Blades switches to that club for you. If you have left that club, you see a short notice and go to your usual start page instead.

| Notification | Where you land |
| - | - |
| Session added, changed or cancelled | The session, on your schedule. If it no longer exists, you see a message and a way back to that day. |
| Removed from a session | Your schedule on the day of that session. |
| Training | The training session in your upcoming list. |
| Added to a crew | Your schedule. Organisers open the crew instead. |
| Feedback | The conversation for that session in **Feedback**. |
| Equipment booking moved | The booking, on its day in **Bookings**. |
| Equipment booking removed | **Bookings** on that day. |

On Android and desktop, some notifications have a button such as **View session** or **Open feedback**. It opens the same place as tapping the notification and never changes anything for you.

Your app icon may show a badge with the number of notifications still waiting. It clears as you open them.

## Turn them off

Open **Settings**, then **Notifications**, and select **Disable notifications** under **This device**. Blades deletes this device's subscription straight away. Other devices are unaffected. To stop one kind, untick it instead.

## If notifications are not working

| What you see | What to do |
| - | - |
| **Notifications are blocked for this site** | You chose Block earlier. Allow notifications for Blades in your browser's site settings, or on iOS in **Settings**, then **Notifications**, then Blades Rowing. Return to Blades and enable them again. |
| **Notifications need the app on your Home Screen** or **This browser cannot receive notifications** | On iPhone or iPad, add Blades to your Home Screen and open it from there. You need iOS or iPadOS 16.4 or later. Otherwise try a current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. |
| **Notifications were switched off for this device by your browser or device, or the subscription expired** | Select **Turn back on**. This happens after you clear site data, reinstall the app, or your browser retires an old subscription. |
| Switched on but nothing arrives | Check that the kind is ticked, that your device is not in a focus or do-not-disturb mode, and that Blades is allowed to notify in your device settings. Disable and enable notifications again to create a fresh subscription. |
| A notification opens the wrong club or a page you cannot use | You may have changed club or role since it was sent. Use the club switcher, or ask your organiser. |
